The Golden Goose

Season: Monday 5 April to Saturday 29 May 2010
Synopsis: The Golden Goose is another well-loved tale from the Brothers Grimm adapted by William Ford for Young People’s Theatre.
The Golden Goose is the story of Dumbling, a woodcutter’s son, and a Princess who cannot laugh. Dumbling, the naive and unappreciated youngest of the woodcutter’s three sons, unlike his older brothers, willingly shares his bread with a strange little man in the forest where he goes to chop wood. The little old man rewards Dumbling by giving him a Golden Goose.
As Dumbling travels through the countryside, people try to touch the Golden Goose and become stuck, first to the Goose, then to one another, creating a procession of people running behind him as he continues on his journey. Dumbling unknowingly leads his procession to the kingdom where the serious Princess lives.
The King and Queen are at their wits’ end with worry about their daughter. They have tried all manner of ways to make her laugh, or even smile. Now, in desperation, they have offered a reward for the person who can make the Princess laugh? What will happen when she sees Dumbling and his unlikely band of travelling companions? Will Dumbling be the one to make the Princess laugh and claim the reward?
