YPT Class Descriptions

Core Classes

Primary Drama

60 minute classes – $280 per Semester (Two Terms)
90 minute classes – $385 per Semester (Two Terms)

Drama classes are the foundation for all other YPT classes and productions. Drama Classes teach students valuable performance and life skills in a fun and engaging environment. Drama encourages students to think creatively as they develop their confidence through a wide variety of inclusive, energetic, and fun activities. Drama is the foundation of all performing arts disciplines and students will have the opportunity to explore other areas of performing such as basic voice and movement, puppetry, improvisation, and script work.

Note: Students must enrol in drama to access extension classes

High School Drama

90 minute classes – $385 per Semester (Two Terms)

Drama classes are the foundation for all other YPT classes and productions. Students enrolled in high school drama classes will be provided with age appropriate content catered specifically to their class group. Students will be given the opportunity to explore a wide variety of forms and styles while building their skills and confidence in performing. Drama is an excellent way to build life skills in a fun and inclusive environment.

*Students must enrol in drama to access extension classes until Year 11 for Think Beyond, or Year 10 for Behind the Scenes.

Think Beyond Drama– Advanced Skills Development

90 minutes class – $385 per Semester (Two Terms)
25% discount for additional YPT classes after 1st Think Beyond Enrolment.

Think Beyond Drama will be a focused class with a flexible curriculum designed to challenge our senior students while providing a collaborative and engaging classroom environment. The focus of this class is to engage with theatre styles, forms and practitioners in a practical way, that allows our students to develop their personal performance and theatre literacy through group work and high quality workshops.

*Think Beyond is opened to Years 11/12 + the first year post-school.

Think Beyond Drama – Industry Pathways

90 minutes class – $385 per Semester (Two Terms)
25% discount for additional YPT classes after 1st Think Beyond Enrolment.

Our Industry Pathways courses will be specifically designed to develop students’ personal performance. The Industry Pathways course is perfect for students interested in pursuing a career in the arts, teaching, tutoring or for students looking to further develop their performance skills for their Higher School Certificate.

Students will learn how best to prepare for auditions, how to behave in a professional rehearsal space and industry standards. Students will learn a variety of methods and techniques from practitioners across the world to enable them to find their own performance style.

*Think Beyond is opened to Years 11/12 + Post-school (first year and second year post school).

Think Beyond Musical Theatre – Performance Ensemble

90 minutes class – $385 per Semester (Two Terms)
25% discount for additional YPT classes after 1st Think Beyond Enrolment.

Note: In enrolling for this class in Semester 1, students are committed for both Semester 1 and 2 (four terms) due to working on a production.

The Think Beyond Performance Ensemble will spend their class time working on a production to play for a one – weekend season late in Term 4. Audition preparation, auditions and rehearsals will all take place during class time with only minimal commitment outside of class closer to their performance date. The class will develop the skills and understanding required to create a high quality production during this rehearsal period as well as learn other valuable tools to succeed as a performer.

*Think Beyond is opened to Years 11/12 + post-school (first year and second year post school). Acceptance into Think Beyond is not automatic. Students will be contacted by the Theatre School Coordinators for more information.

Note: The production is a full-length show, and is part of the 2022 season. The title of the show will be announced at the Think Beyond Taster Workshop, held on Tuesday 14 December 2021.

YPT Extension Class Descriptions

YPT offers extension classes to currently enrolled drama students to further develop their skills, confidence and understanding in other areas of the performing arts.

Students in years 2–10 must enrol in a Drama class before they can access the extension class program. Drama provides the foundational skills for all our classes.

Students in Year 11, 12 and post-school (first year or second year post school) can choose either Think Beyond Drama, Think Beyond Musical Theatre or Think Beyond Industry Pathways as their core class. Following enrolment in a Think Beyond Course they can access Extension Classes applicable to their Year group. 

Students in Years 10 and above, may enrol in Behind the Scenes without enrolling in Drama classes.

How to enrol in Extension Classes

CURRENT YPT STUDENTS: Once registered for Drama you will receive a link via email to enrol in extension classes. 

FUTURE YPT STUDENTS: View our Timetable and Waitlist for your preferred drama class. Following enrolment in a drama class you can access our extension classes.

FUTURE SENIOR YPT STUDENTS YRS 11/12 (Think Beyond): Register for any of our Think Beyond Courses with available spaces. You are able to choose either a Musical Theatre OR Drama OR Industry Pathways option. Following enrolment in a Think Beyond course you can access our Extension Class program. Enrolment in Think Beyond is not guaranteed. A member of YPT will contact you to confirm your enrolment. N.B. A 25% discount applies for any additional classes for our Senior Students. 

FUTURE SENIOR YPT STUDENTS YRS 10+ (Behind the Scenes): Register for Behind the Scenes via the website. Following enrolment in the Behind-the-Scenes course you can access our Extension Class program. Enrolment in Behind the Scenes not guaranteed. A member of the YPT will contact you to confirm your enrolment. 

Musical Theatre

Sing-Act-Move

45 minute classes (Minis) – $200 per Semester (Two Terms)
60 minute classes (Kids) – $280 per Semester (Two Terms)

A perfect, energetic introduction (minis) or progression (kids) for students interested in exploring fundamentals of singing, dance and storytelling. Active, engaging, fun and supportive. Includes rhythm and musicality via voice work and movement sequences. Beneficial for developing skills for future participation in auditions and Musical Theatre or Dance classes.

Musical Theatre

60 minute classes – $280 per Semester (Two Terms)
90 minute classes – $385 per Semester (Two Terms)

Develop skills in singing, dancing and acting and explore dynamic numbers from your favourite musicals in a high energy class. An ensemble-based program recommended for students who wish to challenge themselves in a supportive environment while learning how to tell stories via voice, movement and characterisation.

Foundation Musical Theatre

60 minute classes – $280 per Semester (Two Terms)

Great class for those who are newer to Musical Theatre, or those who do not want to be involved in Performance Ensemble. This class is a slower pace, designed for students who want to focus on the foundations of Musical Theatre eg. Singing, Dancing and Acting. Students will develop their skills in a fun and safe environment and be nurtured to feel confident in this discipline.

Dance

Tap Mini

30 minute class – $140 per Semester (Two Terms)

This class is a mini class offered to students in Year 3–5 to give an introduction and foundation to Tap Dancing. Learn basic tap combos; patterns and foundation steps. An active class building confidence and stamina in a fun, engaging, supportive environment while building skills in musicality and rhythm.

Dance

60 minute class – $280 per Semester (Two Terms)

Dance is a composite class where students learn the foundation and progression of both the Jazz and Tap Disciplines. Now with a new structure, the class will now be taught by both a Jazz and Tap teacher for the duration of the lesson in the Tap room. Each week will be structured slightly differently depending on which discipline is being focused on that week. Students will gain a great  understanding of movement to build their confidence in dancing in production as well as participate in a fun and active class. Students will learn the skills needed to join the Jazz and Tap classes once they reach Year 8.

Jazz Dance

60 minute class – $280 per Semester (Two Terms)

Strengthen dance technique; develop skills and confidence to dance in Musical Productions; develop ability to pick up choreography quickly and add explore character. An energetic, active, fun and supportive class!

Jazz is offered in two levels based on experience:

  • Jazz Level 1 – Beginner to Intermediate Skills
  • Jazz Level 2 – Intermediate to Advanced Skills

Level 1 enrolment is open to any YPT student in Years 8+ however please contact Chelsea at school@ypt.org.au for Level 2 enrolment.

Tap Dance

30 minute class – $200 per Semester (Two Terms)
45 minute class – $240 per Semester (Two Terms)

Recommended for the development of skills in rhythm, musicality and dance technique. Learn basic to challenging tap combos; terminology; tap patterns and tap styles. An active class building confidence and stamina in a fun, engaging, supportive environment.

Tap is offered in two levels based on experience:

  • Tap Level 1 – Beginner to Intermediate Skills
  • Tap Level 2 – Intermediate to Advanced Skills

Level 1 enrolment is open to any YPT student in Years 8+ however please contact Chelsea at school@ypt.org.au for Level 2 enrolment.

Specialist Classes

Sparkle Choir

60 minute class – $280 per Semester (Two Terms)

Sparkle Choir is YPT’s very own vocal group where students work on their ensemble singing skills. Learn harmonies, dynamics and even musical theory as well as have access to performance opportunities. Students will work towards performance opportunities such as Sparkle and Shine, The 2023 Season Launch and Community based performances in the Hamilton Area.

Sparkle Troupe (DRAMA)

60 minute class – $280 per Semester (Two Terms)

An extension drama class for our upper primary, early high school age. With tutor guidance, students devise original performative work within the group. Play-built plays begin with drama games, dramatic activities, improvisation and discussion and are based on the interests and passions of the group creating them. Students will work towards a performance in Sparkle and Shine, the 2023 Season Launch and Community based performance in the Hamilton Area.

Behind the Scenes (Tech)

90 minute class – $385 per Semester (Two Terms)

Behind the Scenes is a Technical based course for students interested in the Behind the Scenes of a production. In Terms 1 and 2, students will learn the basics in crew, lighting, sound and stage management and work on skills required in designing and operating for productions. This course is counted as your Tech Workshop and you are therefore able to do crew  for YPT productions after Term 1 of this course. In Terms 3 and 4, students will work towards crew responsibilities and coordinate and operate the tech for the Theatre School Showcase and the Think Beyond Performance Ensemble Production.

Note: Students will attend weekly classes in Terms 3 and 4 and later in Term 4 will be required for tech, dress and performances for the Think Beyond Performance Ensemble.

External enrolment available for Years 10+ without accessing drama via application. External students who do not attend drama, are not eligible to perform in productions, however they are eligible to apply for crew.

Private Tuition

Private Tuition (Singing)

30 minute individual lesson– $35/week (billed by the term)

Beginners to advanced levels, classes are tailored to the students needs. High-quality 30 min weekly lessons taught by qualified and experienced teachers. After understanding students’ goals, teachers create individualised lessons to strengthen singing techniques, build performance confidence, prepare for auditions or school assessments, prepare for selective schools auditions, and develop a personal repertoire. Option to sit formal singing exams.

Private Tuition (Drama)

30 minute individual lesson – $35/week (billed by the term)

Beginners to advanced levels, classes are tailored to the students needs. High-quality 30 min weekly lessons taught by qualified and experienced teachers. After understanding students’ goals, teachers create individualised lessons to strengthen drama practise, build performance confidence, prepare for auditions or school assessments, prepare for selective schools auditions, and develop a personal repertoire.

Private Tuition (Tap)

30 minute individual lesson – $35/week (billed by the term)

Beginners to advanced levels, classes are tailored to the students needs. High-quality 30 min weekly lessons taught by qualified and experienced teachers. These lessons are for students who may need a more one on one approach with these practical skills. Students will work on building their rhythm and musicality and foundational skills. Attending group tap classes is encouraged if viable for the child, however this option is available for those who need to access it.

Small Group Singing Classes

30 minute semi-private lesson – $150 per term

Semi-private lessons are small group singing lessons focusing on building students’ musicality, pitch and rhythm. Students would attend this class in lieu of private singing lessons. This is different to our Musical Theatre classes and it is encouraged to do in addition to our regular extension classes. Students will be grouped in groups of 3 students of similar ages.

Students will learn a song together as a group of three, and work on small group repertoire as opposed to individual work. This is a great stepping stone for students who would be interested in Private Singing Lessons in the future.
