On our last day of dress rehearsals, 3 YPT students came along to see DISNEY’S NEWSIES JR. and gave us their thoughts on the show. Our reviewers were Lily (11), Leila (11) and Isla (11).
Lily: Director Riley McLean’s take on Disney’s Newsies JR. is amazing, it’s on another level! It is very well made, with all the performers putting in 200% all through the show. I could see a very inclusive cast of young performers, ultimately leading to a better show, and this was only the dress rehearsal! I am hoping to see the real show soon and watch the audience reactions. I couldn’t tell if this was the real Disney’s Newsies cast because their level of creativeness belongs in an 8000 seat theatre with a full house! The actor playing Crutchie was passionate about their acting and during the serious scenes, were on point with their character whilst maintaining a few fun sparks. The show is all about a boy named Jack who, with his best friend Crutchie (you’ll see why he’s called that in the show), are paper boys but in a world full of outrageous prices and unfair bosses can anyone really win? Come to YPT and go back in time to 1890 (don’t worry ladies, you don’t need to wear a corset), find out that being a paper boy is easier said than done! Leila: I was really excited to see Disney’s Newsies JR. because it is one of my favourite musicals and a lot of my friends are in the show. I was really excited to watch them perform. The start of the show was really good, it really set the mood for the rest of the performance. I loved the musical numbers, the songs are really catching and the dances were fun to watch. I enjoyed the choreography, especially the tap section! I also really loved the costumes. It was a lot of fun!
Isla: Disney’s Newsies JR. is an outstanding production that is about how everybody deserves a say and the right always to be respected. The show gave the audience the opportunity to learn about the history of newspaper delivery kids and I liked learning about this through the characters. The performers were fun and engaging but were also able to help me understand the sadder points of the story. I really enjoyed the choreography and dancing, and the costumes and the lighting of the show are fantastic. I would recommend coming to see Newsies Jnr at YPT and it would be suitable for kids aged 8 and up and of course adults!
