YPT Family: Meet our new tutor, Jaz

YPT is thrilled to welcome Jaz to our Team. Jaz is a YPT student, currently in our Think Beyond Program and a graduate of our
Beginner Tutor Program. Jaz has taken to mentoring our young people so beautifully and we were thrilled to officially welcome her to the tutoring team earlier this year.
Jaz is currently Production Assistant on DreamWork’s Shrek the Musical JR. and was recently on the YPT stage in Animal Farm and You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Jaz has been at student at YPT since Year 3 in a range of classes including Drama, Musical Theatre, Dance and Singing and has been in many YPT shows including her first, The Jungle Book in 2017. Jaz was the youngest student to ever be involved in A Think Beyond Production, performing as Young Abel in Children of Eden JR in 2020. Jaz is gracing the YPT stage, later this year in Hadestown: Teen Edition as Persephone.
We asked Jaz to share with us more about her love of theatre with the below questions.
Describe what you do as a creative in one sentence?
Jaz: I love using my knowledge and experience in drama, musical theatre, and dance to support and inspire younger students and welcome them into the wonderful world of YPT!
What is your favourite theatre memory?
I have so many!! I would have to say that the feeling of singing harmonies in a group for the first time and the warm feeling and happiness that fills the room is unbeatable!!
What inspires you to do theatre?
I’m inspired to do theatre by the wonderful community I am surrounded by and the many tutors that have taught from yr 3 to now. I now am inspired to be a part of the team that brings theatre to life for these kids.
What are you excited about teaching YPT students?
I am super excited to share my knowledge and love for theatre and being able to create a safe space for YPT students to learn and grow in!
What do you love about theatre/dance/drama?
I love how theatre creates a safe space for everyone and brings people together. Also being in a space where you can be completely yourself and express ideas with no judgment is pretty cool.
What is your favourite play or musical?
If I had to narrow it down i’d say Come from away and Waitress. (But also Next to Normal, and SpongeBob the musical and Dear Evan Hansen)
What is one piece of advice you could give to any YPT student?
JUST DO IT, take that scary step, whether it be coming to your first YPT class or auditioning for your dream role, take a chance and you will always know the YPT community is there with open arms to support you!!
