YPT Family: Meet Cheyenne, our new Office Assistant!

YPT is excited to welcome Cheyenne to the team! The Office Assistant role is a new role that we have introduced at YPT to enable us to extend our office hours on some weeknights and ensure adequate supervision for students arriving for classes at the theatre, as well as helping out with all things admin!
Cheyenne is no stranger to YPT! Having been a student herself from Year 3 to Year 12, Cheyenne is a long-term member of the YPT community and will be appearing on the YPT stage (for the first time in a long time) this July and August as Sister Berthe in The Sound of Music. We are so excited to be welcoming her back to YPT in this new capacity as Office Assistant, and have asked her to share more about her love of theatre with us below.
Tell us a lot more about your connection to YPT?
I feel like I grew up in the YPT theatre, it was basically my second home. I started classes as early as I was able (which used to be year 3) and continued until I graduated from High School. In my first ever show, Three Little Pigs (2009) I played Jill, of Jack and Jill, and got to run on stage yelling “It’s all your fault Jack” which is somewhat of a core memory for me. I was lucky enough to get onstage in numerous productions during my time as a student – and if I wasn’t ON stage for a particular production you could usually find me somewhere back stage as part of the crew, especially in the lighting box. I was last seen on the YPT stage as a Silly Girl in the 2015 production of Beauty and The Beast Jr. but I have 2 (much) younger sisters who are currently YPT students, so I have stayed connected to YPT and been an audience member many times throughout the past few years. I am so looking forward to being at the theatre more and so far this year have already enjoyed stretching my creative muscles at rehearsals for Sound of Music. I’m excited to get to know everyone in the YPT community, whether you are someone who remembers me from many years ago, or a new face, please come and say hello when you see me around!
Describe what you do in the theatre world in one sentence?
I think I can summarise most of what I do as “I’m here to help” – I am be here to help get things done, answer enquiries, and just generally be a bit adaptable to do whatever is needed.
What is your favourite theatre memory?
I think some of my favourite YPT memories come from the times I was on the crew – Being at the theatre until all hours of the night hanging lights and cutting gels; going to the IGA between shows with the rest of the crew for a tub of icecream and packet of plastic spoons to share at Gregson Park…. but also the other best memories are the giggles we would have about the ridiculous back stories we would create for our ensemble characters!
What inspired you to apply to work at YPT?
I have really missed theatre over the past few years. It is something that I love very much and also something that helps bring out a side of me that has become dormant. I auditioned for Sound of Music to reignite that spark, and when I heard that the theatre was looking for an Office Assistant it seemed like the perfect way to stay actively involved with YPT for longer than just the production season. I am so excited to once again be a part of this community and to use my own experience to give back to YPT a little of everything it gave to me growing up.
What do you love about theatre/dance/drama?
It gives me a chance to let go of all the general anxieties and stresses of life and live in my imagination for a bit. I love that on a surface level the theatre is a magical place full of wonder, but on a deeper level I also love to think about the commentary that the creative arts provides about the real world.
What is your favourite play or musical?
Dear Evan Hansen has had a very firm grip on my heart since it first came out.
What is one piece of advice you could give to any YPT student?
Don’t take yourself too seriously, it should be fun! The experiences you have here can be foundational to the person you become, try to enjoy them and take advantage of the opportunities to get a little further outside of your shell or comfort zone in the safe space that YPT creates.
Where can people expect to find you at YPT?
Probably smiling at you from behind the box office window!
Cheyenne will be gracing the YPT stage as Sister Berthe in The Sound of Music opening at YPT this week! You will also find her in the Box Office, answering the phone, and replying to your emails during the week!
