YPT is thrilled to welcome Alexis to our tutoring team! Alexis is a YPT student in the Think Beyond Program, and is also a graduate of our Beginner Tutor Program. She is currently filling a very valuable role as a cover tutor for numerous YPT classes, and is also volunteering as assistant co-choreographer for our upcoming production of Finding Nemo Jr.
Alexis has performed in many YPT productions, including recent performances as Cypher (Animal Farm), Ursula (The Little Mermaid Jr.), White Rabbit (Alice in Wonderland), Witch (Into the Woods) and most recently as Lord Farquaard in Shrek Jr. She will also be gracing the stage again later this year as Eurydice in Hadestown: Teen Edition.
We are so excited to have Alexis sharing her knowledge with the next generation of performers and have asked her to share more about her love of theatre with us below.
Describe what you do as a creative in one sentence?
I strive to learn as much as I can and to employ these skills in teaching the younger generations of performers about the passion and beauty that goes into theatre.
What is your favourite theatre memory?
My first “end of show cry” after we finished the Tuck Everlasting season. It was my first ever show and I was in my first ever role in the Vine Ensemble. Our whole cast was crying because we felt so accomplished in knowing that we created such a beautiful show and built a theatre family along the way. It made me realise what theatre truly embodies – close connections and the beauty of creating. This was the moment that made me want to pursue theatre further.

What inspires you to do theatre?
Theatre has built my self-confidence exponentially! The ability to go on stage and be anything you want is such freedom. I’ve been able to go from being a bratty old man to a villainous octopus! Seeing my family’s, friends’, and tutor’s emotion from watching me perform is one of my biggest motivators and validation that makes me enjoy performing even more. To have the opportunity to be this support to YPT students on their performer journeys is something I’m very excited to be part of.
What are you excited about teaching YPT students?
The joy of performing! I’m grateful to have had so many different experiences to be able to use to teach YPT students and share the knowledge and skills that I’ve developed along the way.
What do you love about theatre/dance/drama?
I love to sing, I love to dance, I love to act and it is so fortunate to have a place like YPT in which we get to connect and share these things with other like-minded people. Being able to perform with friends is the best fun, and I’ve made many strong friendships along the way because of it. It is the best feeling when you are put in the same cast as a friend and get to go along that journey with each other, singing duets, partner dancing, bickering over if its right or left leg and sometimes just trying to keep each other sane.

What is your favourite play or musical?
I may be biased, but I have a current obsession with Hadestown. It is SO my vibe when it comes to musical theatre – a great story alongside a great track! A super-close second would be Newsies for the same reason!
What is one piece of advice you could give to any YPT student?
Put yourself out there, be silly, make bold choices when you’re performing, and just be yourself! That’s the beauty of theatre, you can be anyone and anything if you just believe.
Are you excited to be apart of YPT Tutoring Team?
YES YES YES YESSS!!!

Alexis currently tutors across many YPT classes as a cover tutor and is also on the creative team for Finding Nemo Jr. opening at YPT in September.
