YPT Family: Meet our new tutor, Takira

YPT is thrilled to welcome Takira to our team as both a new Tutor and Duty Tech. Takira is a YPT student in both the Think Beyond Drama and Think Beyond Musical Theatre Programs, and is a graduate of our Beginner Tutor Program. They were the Co-Lighting Designer for our production of Animal Farm (2025) and have Stage Managed countless YPT productions. Takira has also recently stepped into a new and very valuable role at YPT as one of our 4 Duty Techs.
Takira is currently in the production team for A Wrinkle in Time, and has previously performed in many YPT productions, including in the roles of: Oliver in Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic, Little Red in Into The Woods, Grandma in The Addams Family, and Pulitzer in Newsies. Takira will also be gracing the YPT stage again later this year in Hadestown: Teen Edition.
Offstage, Takira dedicated a lot of time to working backstage and mentoring the next generation of tech students. Their contribution to our production is so value and we love seeing them pass on their knowledge to students!
We asked Takira to share more about their love of theatre with us below.
Describe what you do as a creative in one sentence?
The performing and creative arts allows me to expedrience a vast variety of new and exciting opportunities! One sentence is not enough!
What is your favourite theatre memory?
My favourite theatre memory cannot only be summed up in one experience! It’s that small moment when everything comes together – the singing, the dancing, the tech, the months and months of hard work. It all comes together and feels blissful!
What inspires you to do theatre?
It’s YPT’s amazing community that invites and challenges me to push myself as a performer and an individual. It’s the challenge and the opportunity within theatre that makes it feel exciting.
What are you excited about teaching YPT students?
I’m exited to get to know everyone and share my passions, knowledge, and create some awesome theatre!
What do you love about theatre/dance/drama?
All three disciplines are founded on storytelling; sometimes very complex and interesting. I love being able to find deeper meanings in things and continue to tell stories.
What is your favourite play or musical?
Either Moulin Rouge or Ride the Cyclone (Or any show I’ve been in!)
What is one piece of advice you could give to any YPT student?
If you do something, do it with confidence! Confidence is a skill that can help you can anywhere in life. Becoming a tutor, I am starting to tell students, if you do something, do it with confidence – even if it’s wrong. I will never be mad but I will be proud.

On a scale of 1 to 10… 20!!!!!
Takira currently tutors High School Drama classes throughout the week and you will often find them in the backstage area on the weekends! Takira is also on the Creative Team for A Wrinkle in Time, opening at YPT in July!
